As part of the RACP college research requirements, Nandini shortly after moving to Adelaide in February 2023 set up a Prospective Observational study on POCUS (point of care ultrasound scan) for appendicitis performed by ED physicians. The study commenced in August 2023. It is the first study of this nature in Australian setting in a Paediatric tertiary hospital. This study will conclude in May 2024. The primary aim would be to assess the diagnostic accuracy of POCUS for appendicitis when performed by Emergency Clinicians. Secondary aim would be to compare results based on clinicians’ level of experience.
POCUS in paediatrics is a relatively new concept. POCUS is a diagnostic tool in experienced hands and there should be a drive towards actively acquiring POCUS skills and in establishing credentialling processes in Paediatric ED setting. This project matches the brief, “For A Better EM future”.
Adult EDs already have established credentialing programs and POCUS use has been valuable in clinical assessments.
The conclusions and learnings from the above study would be great delivered as a plenary session.
